Artist Jill Fitterer celebrates.

O n December 7, 2003 the exterior of the visitor center at the LA Oiled Bird Care & Education Center in San Pedro was graced with a 7 feet by 28 foot mural of flying pelicans designed and painted by local artist Jill Fitterer, a printmaker in the master of fine arts program at Cal State Long Beach.

To celebrate the unveiling, our staff in San Pedro planned a grand event. Festivities included a silent auction of wildlife art and photographs, and live music by Stucco Rainbow. VIP tours of the 10,000 square foot aquatic bird rehabilitation center gave guests a rare behind the scenes look at the center’s treatment rooms, pools, flight cages, kitchen and washrooms for oiled birds.

Guests were also treated to tables laden with holiday goodies donated by 28 local businesses. Everything needed to hold the event, from cups to tables, tents to food, even the Christmas tree, poinsettias and flower arrangements were donated.

Thanks to the artists

List of businesses who helped

Hundreds of people attended and over 50 pieces of art were sold, helping to raise money, and awareness of the work we do.

Also, IBRRC took the art of the dramatic black and white pelicans and they now are replicated on limited edition t-shirts in four different colors. We will not be doing another printing of these shirts, so order yours today.

This event was such a great success that we decided to make it an annual event. If you would like to donate art for the next auction, e-mail IBRRC.
